5 Healthful Things in Your Fridge

  1. Skimmed milk: drink daily for protein and calcium and to prevent osteoporosis
  2. Non-fat, plain yogurt: for making fruit smoothies, putting on top of fresh fruits, or as a substitute for higher fat sour cream
  3. Natural peanut butter: use as an alternate of bread to spread on morning toast for more protein and healthier fat
  4. Parsley: it’s nutritious, and it dresses up even the most tedious weekday dinners
  5. Lemons: to cheer up your day, get a glass of ice water with 1 or 2 fresh slice; for a low fat salad dressing, use its juice; or to reduce the smell of fish, squeeze on one before cooking

You’ve got any of those yet in your fridge? If not, it’s time for you to shop.

A weekend shopping with the whole family will cheer your day up!

Butter or Margarine?

Why some say that butter is better?

  • It’s a rich source of vitamin A and all the other fat-soluble vitamins such as E, K, and D
  • It contains minerals which are great anti-oxidant as well as iodine which is needed by the thyroid gland
  • It contains glycospingolipids, a special category of fatty acids that protect against gastrointestinal infections

Then, why some people think that butter is unhealthy?

  • It contains saturated fat that increases the “bad” cholesterol (LDL)
  • It has 33 milligrams of cholesterol in one tablespoon alone

What about margarine? What makes it good?

  • It’s made from vegetable oils, so it contains no cholesterol
  • It’s also high in “good” fats — polyunsaturated and monounsaturated. Polyunsaturated fat helps reduce LDL. Monounsaturated fat helps reduce cholesterol and resists oxidation

Then why some say it’s bad?

Then, what to choose?

Actually, it’s not about choosing, it’s about consuming wisely. You still can consume both as long as:

  • when you have some butter, remember that your intake is less than 7 tablespoons a day (even less than that if you have cholestrol or heart-healthy problem)
  • when you go for margarine, check out the nutrition label, leave it if it contains trans fat

Don’t Skip Dinner!

This is important for dieters!

Sometimes, skipping dinner is a way that’s chosen by dieters.

But do you know that it can decelerate your metabolism process? How?

If you don’t eat, your body thinks that you’re hungry, so it adjusts by slowing down the metabolism process.

It means that your diet will reach its result in a longer time because the key to losing weight lies in your metabolism.

An worst, you might feel extremely hungry to the point that you eat a lot after mealtime.

Thus, if you’re on a diet, the best way to lose your weight is by not skipping any mealtime but being wiser to what you eat!

Happy diet!

Heathful Cooking Habits (Part 2)

Here are the next 5 I promised yesterday…

  • Use olive oil if you think the cooking need oil so badly
  • Avoid eating charred food, the short cooking time reduces nutrient losses
  • Avoid open-flame grilling of meats as it produces cancer-promoting compounds. Roasting, poaching or stir frying is a lot better
  • Try using some soy flour in your home-made biscuits and breads
  • Try more fruit desserts (fresh, stewed and cobblers) instead of cakes and cookies. Choose frozen yogurt, sherbet and sorbet instead of ice cream with whipped cream topping :D

Bon appetit!

Heathful Cooking Habits (Part 1)

These are so easy that you can even start right now…

  • Cut the salth in half in your favorite recipes. After awhile you won’t even taste the difference
  • Use non-stick pans for grilling or stir-frying, so you won’t even have to add oil
  • Steam instead of boiling vegetables to avoid destroying or leaching out valuable nutrients
  • More and more vegetables
  • Always consume low fat ingredents

Try these 5 today, find the rest tomorrow! :)

American Idol with Andrea Bocelli! Inspirations?

Do you like Andrea Bocelli?

Do you watch American Idol?

I do both and can’t wait to see how Bocelli will work with these future idols. I loved it when they worked with Barry Manilow and Rod Stewart. Both seemed very inspiring.

There’s something about Barry. I always like him. He has some kind of an inner charm. He’s both my mom’s idol and mine.

I think everybody should have an idol, at least one. Many might even be greater. Why?

Because it will give you strength. Seeing them successful in their life makes you also wanna be as successful. So, you get motivation on achieving your goals.

I had never ever been having an idea of being a singer, like Barry, but his success had made me wanna be doing well in my own field.

So, I think, if you haven’t been getting what you desire, try to look back. Do you have an idol? Do you have a role model? Maybe that’s what you need! :)

Flower - Good for those who’re sick

Today I visited my friend who fell and hurt her ankle. She seemed better. Glad to see her smile again.

Her smile was even wider when she saw a white rose hand bouquet that I brought her.

I believe that flowers are good to bring when you visit a sick person. Flowers give such a huge streght and energy that the one you visit will feel a lot better.

So, planning to visit a sick neighbor, friend, family? Don’t forget to pick some flowers from your garden or buy a nice bouquet! ;)
