Pharyngitis (a.k.a Sore Throat)
Pharyngitis is a painful inflammation of the pharynx.
It isn’t a disease. It’s a symptom of another illness — usually a viral infection such as a cold or the flu (influenza). It’s the first indication that you’re getting sick.
Most sore throats are caused by a virus and go away on their own in about a week. That’s why seeing a doctor is not necessary.
Yet, a small percentage of sore throat are bacterial infections. So, it may require medical care.
To get better, no need to take antibiotics since they aren’t effective against viruses. Viruses would respond best to self-care measures such as resting and drinking plenty of fluids.
To help, try salt-water gargles, throat lozenges or warm water with honey and lemon.
However, if it lasts longer than a week, causes you Severe difficulty swallowing or breathing, or your temperature is higher than 103F, you’d better see the doctor.
And, most important: avoid infecting others.
Keep your germs to yourself, ok?
