Antioxidants: The Benefits and Sources

Antioxidants are substances that may protect your cells against the effects of free radicals. Free radicals are molecules produced when your body breaks down food, or by environmental exposures like tobacco smoke and radiation. Free radicals can damage cells, and may play a role in heart disease, cancer and other diseases. Indeed, a recent study conducted by researchers from London found that 5 servings of fruits and vegetables reduce the risk of stroke by 25 percent. Antioxidants may also enhance immune defense and therefore lower the risk of cancer and infection.

Some of the antioxidant sources are:

  • Vitamin A and Carotenoids, such as carrots, squash, broccoli, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, kale, collards, cantaloupe, peaches and apricots (bright-colored fruits and vegetables!)

  • Vitamin C, such as citrus fruits like oranges and lime etc, green peppers, broccoli, green leafy vegetables, strawberries and tomatoes

  • Vitamin E, such as nuts & seeds, whole grains, green leafy vegetables, vegetable oil and liver oil

  • Selenium, such as fish & shellfish, red meat, grains, eggs, chicken and garlic

What is so important about this Environmental Health and Safety? How does it concern us?

It is very important because this concerns our environment; the air we breath, the water we drink, and the land we live in. The government actually has the regulation and law regarding EHS. These regulation and law determine what is safe and what is not safe for the people and its environment around industrial area. However, more and more industries don’t care much about this EHS compliance. They think that this EHS compliance will take too much of their time and money.

The fact is not like that. Now there are companies that provide EHS Compliance Software. The Appropriate SPF Levels for Your Outdoor Activities

As we know, the SPF number stands for how long a person wearing sun protection can stay in the sun before they start to burn. This length of time is determined by multiplying the SPF by 10 minutes. (for example: an SPF 15 x 10 minutes = 150 minutes a person can be in the sun before they start to burn). According to this calculation, an SPF of 50, 50 or even 70 should mean that a person can stay even longer in the sun without burning or re-applying. Yet this calculation can cause misunderstanding and misuse. According to a study by the FDA, an SPF 15 can provide approximately 93% protection from the sun, while an SPF 60 provides approximately 98%.

No matter which level of sunscreen is used, the guidelines for use and application are the same.

  • Reapply every two hours
  • Avoid the sun between 10am –2pm, when the rays are the strongest.
  • Wear protective clothing, such as hats and cover-ups

As a guideline, appropriate SPF levels are:

  • SPF 20 or lower – ideal for everyday use with minimal sun exposure, such as walking down the street or driving in a car to work
  • SPF 30 or higher – ideal when spending 2 or more hours outdoors, even on a cloudy day, since clouds don’t block UV rays.

Many people are more aware of health in general. They show more concern for the state of their own current and future health. Thus, the demand for the professionals with the best medical training increases.

Medical careers are not as limited to just physicians and nurses. There are more than that. Get Prepared for Tennis

  1. Do dynamic warm-up, that typically involves performing exercises like arm swings, lunges, and trunk twists.  Those exercises warm the body up and get the muscles working.
  2. When playing tennis in the sun, it is important to wear light (weight and color), loose fitting clothing so that sweat can be properly evaporated and your body can cool itself.    Light colored clothing will reflect the sun rather than absorb it like dark colored clothing.  In addition, sweat soaked clothes do not allow for evaporation to take place so change to dry clothing whenever possible.  Now there are stores that specify in tennis apparel.
  3. Every sport has different moves, specification, or even fields.  So, like any other exercise like aerobic, jogging, soccer, and so on, use special women’s or men’s tennis shoes.  If you feel comfortable, then you can perform much better.
  4. This is very important; Keep yourself hydrated.  You need to drink a lot of water during play and most tend to avoid severe problems such as cramping or having to retire due to overheating.
