Bono, Africa and Malaria

Bono, the U2 frontman, is well known for his actions in fighting against diseases and poverty in Africa.

He applauded some African countries for their efforts to control malaria, which claims millions of lives on the continent every year.

What is Malaria anyway?

It’s a serious, infectious disease spread by certain kinds of mosquitoes. It is common in tropical climates.

It can be transmitted by a mosquito or through blood transfusions. It can’t be passed directly from one human to another.

A person infected with malaria passes through three stages of very distinctive symptoms:

  1. uncontrollable shivering for an hour or two
  2. quick rising of temperature
  3. sweating abundantly, rapid drop of temperature

Other symptoms accompanying above are fatigue, severe headache, nausea, and vomiting.

Heart Check-up before World Cup?

Are you having heart problem?

If you do, I suggest you to get a check-up on your heart before letting yourself sitting right in front of your TV to enjoy World Cup. Especially for those who get so attached to their team.

In the 1998 World Cup, the number of heart attacks in Britain rose by 25 per cent when England lost to Argentina in a penalty shootout, according to a study in the British Medical Journal (BMJ). [People’s Daily Online]

The above detail is my reason to the above suggestion. You surely don’t want your heart to stop if your team lose the game, do you?

But, I also have a good news for those who have heart problem regarding the world cup. On the contrary, it might even lower the death rate from heart attack.

During the 1998 World Cup, when France defeated Brazil in the final, deaths from heart attacks in men and women dropped on the day of the match. [HeartCenterOnline]

So, are you all ready for the forthcoming World Cup?

The Twins are Doing Just Fine

It must have been such a great news for Jesse and Amy Carlsen, parents of conjoined twin daughters, Abbigail and Isabelle, to find out that the nearly 7 hours surgery to separate them went very well.

According to doctors handling the surgery, the process was complicated but there was a 90-95 percent chance that these twin sisters survived. The team taking part in the operation consisted of about 30 people, applauding when finally the livers were seperated.

These great baby girls are now doing just fine.

But how actually this could happened to them?

Conjoined twins happens where thezygote of identical twins fails to completely separate. They occur in an estimated one in 200,000 births. [wikipedia]

Are all separation surgery successful like these girls?

The younger the twins get the surgery, the bigger the survival rates. Especially now with more accurate imaging studies and better anesthetic and operative techniques.

However, the operation is more difficult in adults than in children whose brains are better able to recover from the surgery. This was what happened to 29-year-old law graduates, Laleh and Ladan Bijani, the conjoined twins from Iran. The world was sharing grief for the loss of these courageous and brave ladies.

Such a Smart, Passionate Cat

Reading this made me remember my cat back when I was little. His name was Snowy because he was totally white. Besides, I was also a bit influenced by Tintin, one of my favorite comics.

Snowy saved my life a lot…by waking me up every morning. Thanks to him, I never missed my schoolbus.

I love you so much, Snowy!
