Advertising has been strong when it comes to losing weight products and services. Through this medium, people are becoming more interested and captivated with the promises and the assurances these ads hold. In this modern world, everything that meets the eye is marketable- sad to say.
We need not carried away with these commercials. Increasing your metabolism is the best means of doing so. You just need your self, and a little help from outside factors. The first step is to measure your metabolism.
How do we measure metabolism?
A metabolic test comes in two ways. The first method is direct calorimetry. This method measures the energy expended in the form of heat. The other one is indirect calorimetry, it measures the amount of oxygen consumed over a period of time. Traditionally used in hospital and research facilities due to the cost of the machine and the need for trained technicians.
What are the needed preparations for the test?
The aim of the test is to gauge the RMR or the Resting Metabolic Rate of an individual. Therefore, he or she needs to avoid eating a meal 1 and a half hours before the test, avoid exercising on the day of your test and avoid the use of stimulants such as caffeine on the day of the test.
What happens in the testing bed?
span style=”font-size: 12pt”>You will relax in a seated position; the doctor will ask you to do this. A mask or mouthpiece would be used and you have to breathe in there for ten to fifteen minutes. A report after the test would be printed out by the machine. The most important part is that you discuss the results with the doctor in order to come up with the next steps for your diet plans.
Would the test results be useful for good?
No. You have to retest after some time. Your RMR and your total metabolism changes through time. Change in any element of your lifestyle would directly affect the result. For you to keep a track of your metabolic rate, seek help from a doctor.
There is a need for one person to give value to his metabolism because it will not just decide your size but it will have an impact on your lifestyle and on your entire life.

Enhancing the quality and length of your life by quitting smoking is a worthwhile effort. Quitting smoking is the best move that you can make for your health and the health of all of those around you. Just about everyone knows by now that smoking causes diseases that shorten your life or those that may even end it. Diseases such as lung cancer, throat, esophagus, bladder, and kidney, and pancreas cancers are some horrible things caused by smoking for a start. Not to mention some leukemia, stomach, and cervix cancers, and newly added by the Surgeon General is pneumonia. People who smoke are more than three times as likely to die due to heart attack as non smokers. Smoking is a major risk factor for a disease that narrow the blood vessels that transport blood to the limbs and muscles called peripheral vascular disease as well as the disease that causes some strokes.
If that‘s not enough to convince you to stop smoking, let’s look at your appearance. Premature wrinkling of skin, chronic bad breath, discolored fingernails and hair, and an increase risk of macular degeneration a leading cause of blindness in the elderly. Smoking over the age of thirty-five if you are a woman can put you in a high risk group for stroke, heart attack, and blood clots of the legs, low birth weight of babies and miscarriages. But the hopeful portion of this message is that if you decide to quite regardless of how long you’ve smoked or how much, quitting will help you to live longer.
Smoking is less socially accepted now more than ever. Smoking bans have been placed in just about every workplace in the nation along with airports, public buildings. Even friends may insist that you not smoke in their houses or cars. Some people may even find dating more difficult because of a bad smoking habit. So the social impacts of not smoking will probably change your life for the better if you quit.
If you have a family, that is another great motivation to quit smoking. The main reason is that the secondhand smoke could pose serious health problems for others who do not deserve such things.
Some of the many new products used to help an individual to stop smoking are really very effective. Counseling services, reading materials, medicines, and patches are all widely available and have produced some amazing results. Take the time and do it for yourself and your loved ones, quit for life.

The term “male menopause” is used to refer to the condition of men who have hormone levels drop after mid-life. Male menopause is a subject of controversy in the medical society. In the case of women, menopause is related with the termination of a bodily operation, like when the monthly menstruation periods stop. Also, a critical drop in the hormone levels in women occurs along with menopause. For these reasons, doctors are debating on whether male menopause really exists.
In the case of men in their middle and elderly years, smaller quantities of testosterone are being created by the testicles. This is believed to be the underlying reasons behind the occurrence of symptoms of male menopause. Men with menopause usually suffer from irritability, sleep disturbance, low sex drive, sweating, anxiety, sadness, memory problems, and erectile dysfunction. In most cases, erectile dysfunction may be caused by other disorders. But testosterone deficiency may be one possibility.
As a treatment, hormone replacement therapy is being recommended for men with low levels of testosterone and symptoms that come with it. Hormone replacement may not be applicable to older men who seek treatment for their erectile dysfunction unless they actually have very minimal levels of androgen. As for younger men with known hormone deficiency, it has been proven that nominal doses of testosterone can improve interest in sex.
Testosterone replacement therapy, which is also called as androgen replacement therapy, aims to reduce the symptoms brought about by male menopause. Androgen therapy, however, comes with potential side effects and risks on the prostate, mental functioning, and cardiovascular system. Older men undiagnosed of prostate cancer should also take caution when being applied with androgens. Sleep apnea, or the cessation of breathing during sleep, is also considered as a rare risk with hormone therapy.

While many people lament the nutritional disadvantages of a poorly planned vegetarian diet, few stress the health advantages of adopting a vegetarian or vegan diet. In this article, I will cover the major three nutritional advantages of becoming a vegetarian.
The first major advantage of a vegetarian diet is increased heart health. Vegetarians, on average, consume more nuts (often as a supplemental form of protein). Nuts contain “good” fats, such as omega-3 and omega-6. This promotes good heart health by reducing “bad” cholesterol and unclogging arteries. In addition to nuts, vegetarians also consume more soy milk (often to replace milk), which reduces “bad” cholesterol and has been linked to good heart health.
The second major advantage vegetarians enjoy is increased skin health. In addition to consuming larger quantities of nuts (which contain healthful oils), vegetarians tend to consume more fruit and vegetables, which are rich in essential vitamins, including A and E, which are linked to good skin health. Fruits and vegetables also contain high amounts of fiber, which helps flush toxins out of the body, further contributing to better skin health.
The last health advantage vegetarians enjoy is an increased natural consumption of antioxidants.

When you have a headache, you typically open a cabinet and get some sort of medication. Which you choose tends to be based on how often you have them and what you have experienced working in the past. These over the counter (OTC) pain relievers are commonly used to treat any headache, whether from a recurring primary disorder (like a migraine) or secondary to another condition (like a hangover).
These medications are typically abortive medicines – that is, they stop the headache or at least lessen its strength. They are usually taken as you need them and, when used as directed, normally pose no significant side effects. Unless you need to take them often. Analgesics, such as Tylenol (acetaminophen), Bayer (aspirin), and Advil (ibuprofen) can have adverse effects when taken frequently or over a long period of time. Using any of these products more than twice a week can cause a condition known as rebound headache phenomenon. Rebound headaches are a sort of dependency on the analgesic and cause your headaches to occur more often. This condition also can build a tolerance to the medication whereby you need ever increasing doses to find relief.
Analgesics also have other side effects that you should be aware of. Tylenol should never to be taken while you are consuming alcohol or have a hangover. Tylenol and alcohol together can overwhelm your liver and cause failure of that organ. Surprisingly, it does not always take a significant amount of either; the damage is done by the timing of the two substances hitting the liver. Ibuprofen and aspirin tend to be rough on the stomach and so should always be taken with food and milk. The problem for many who need to take these pain relievers often is that they can cause damage to the stomach and intestines, creating heartburn, ulcers, and even deadly intestinal bleeding. Additionally, taking more than the recommended amount of any of these products can also cause liver failure.
So, have a care when taking any pain relief, even the OTC ones. The best suggestion is that if we can still handle the pain, then don’t take any medication.
